Being a busy homemaker means juggling multiple responsibilities, from family obligations to household chores and errands. With such a packed schedule, it can be challenging for moms to keep up with the demands of homemaking. In this blog post, we’ll explore 10 homemaking tips for busy moms to help you stay organized, efficient, and stress-free.
1. Make a To-Do List
One of the most effective ways to stay on top of homemaking tasks is to create a to-do list. This can help you prioritize tasks and ensure that nothing falls through the cracks. Consider using a planner or digital calendar to schedule tasks and set reminders for deadlines.
2. Create a Cleaning Schedule
Creating a cleaning schedule can help you stay on top of household chores. Consider scheduling specific tasks for certain days of the week, such as laundry on Mondays, kitchen cleaning on Wednesdays, and bathrooms on Fridays.
Personally, I love the FlyLady App. On the app you rotate through different monthly zones each week. It also has daily tasks and routines you can work through and check off.
3. Utilize Meal Planning
Meal planning can be a lifesaver for busy moms. Plan ahead for meals and create a grocery list, making it easier and less stressful for you to prepare meals in advance. Slow cookers and pressure cookers are great tools for busy moms who do not have too much time.
I have also enjoyed batch cooking. One day you can cook up all the meat you need for the next few dinners, or premake a bunch of meals ahead of time.
Another way I like to meal plan is using my notes app. I write down seven dinners for the week, lunches are leftovers or sandwiches, and breakfasts are typically smoothies, eggs and toast, yogurt and fruit, or oatmeal. I like to have set days that are usually the same meals.
For example, Taco Tuesday, Pizza Friday, BBQ Saturday, Savory Sunday, etc. This makes it easy for me to not spend too much time and energy reinventing the wheel. At least once a week we also do rice bowls. I can varietize this by using different meats, veggies and sauces while still keeping it simple.
4. Delegation
As moms, it can be challenging to ask for help or delegate tasks. However, outsourcing responsibilities can help relieve some of the pressure and allow you to focus on other priorities. Consider having your family pitch in with household tasks.
I like to assign a zone to each child. Currently I assign these zones: Kitchen, Dining, Living Room, Bathrooms. They each have individual tasks they are responsible to complete every day. I have my younger kids help with the detailed cleaning list, like wiping cupboards, baseboards, etc. The younger kids also help with daily pick ups. Everyone is responsible for keeping their own bedrooms tidy. My older kids do their own laundry. I help the younger kids with their laundry, but they are learning to be more independent so they can eventually do it on their own.
5. Simplify
A cluttered and disorganized home can add to the stress of busy moms. Simplifying your home can make it easier to clean and maintain, as well as promote a sense of calm and relaxation. Consider opting for multi-functional furniture, like ottomans or storage benches, or opting for minimalist decor that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
6. Establish Routines
Establishing daily, weekly, and monthly routines can help you stay on track with homemaking tasks. For instance, a morning routine may involve making beds, doing a load of laundry, and unloading the dishwasher, while a weekly routine may involve deep cleaning different areas of the home. Again, I highly recommend the FlyLady App.
7. Prioritize Self Care
It can be easy to get caught up in the demands of homemaking and neglect self-care. However, prioritizing self-care is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. Prioritize your spiritual, physical, and family relationships. Make time for activities that bring you joy, such as reading a book, taking a bubble bath or going for a walk.
8. Invest in Storage Solutions
Clutter can be a significant source of stress for busy moms. Investing in creative storage solutions, such as baskets, bins or shelving, can help you stay organized and clutter-free. Consider storing items vertically to maximize space and minimize clutter.
Recently we invested in bookshelves, we have needed these for a long time. Let me tell you, they are such a game changer! I am able to store so many books on them and on the bottom shelves I am planning to utilize baskets with toys, diapers and wipes, and other items.
9. Stay Proactive
As a busy homemaker, it’s important to stay proactive and address household issues before they become more significant problems. For instance, regularly checking for leaks, upgrading appliances, or investing in energy-efficient home improvements can save time and stress in the long run.
10. Practice Gratitude
Finally, practicing gratitude can help busy moms stay positive and motivated. Focus on appreciating the small joys of homemaking, from a freshly laundered bedsheet to a home-cooked meal shared with family. This positive outlook can help you stay motivated and energized even during busy and challenging times.
Homemaking can be a challenging and demanding task for busy moms. By staying organized, prioritizing self-care, outsourcing tasks when possible, and practicing gratitude, you can make homemaking a little easier and more enjoyable. Remember to be kind to yourself and celebrate the small successes along the way.
