Do you have fond memories of reading books as a kid? Have you found as you have grown and become an adult your desire to read more books is there, but it is hard to find the time? I know as a homeschooling mom of 9 with lots of hobbies, I have faced this challenge. Here is what has worked for me to read more books each month.
- Audiobooks
Audiobooks are a game-changer for those with busy schedules. While you drive around running errands, or maybe you are running around the house from one chore to the next, audiobooks provide hands-free reading that regular books just cannot provide. My favorite is Audible. You can also try Librivox or your local library’s audiobook collection to access a vast array of titles. By incorporating audiobooks into your routine you can easily “read” while doing dishes or other tasks. It is the ultimate way to multitask! Don’t forget to check out the free books and add those to your library!
2. Kindle
You do not need to have a Kindle device to utilize this tool. Using the Kindle app on my smartphone, I have been able to read a plethora of books during times I simply would not be able to read a physical book. I like to use the Kindle app at night while I am nursing my baby, or simply pinned under a sleeping baby. Other times this can be useful is when riding passenger in the car. Instead of packing so many books with you and risk them getting ruined in the car, you can simply pull out your phone and choose from many books in your library. Like Audible, the Kindle app also features many books for free.
3. Reading Apps
Beyond the Kindle, there are other great apps to help you read more books each month. Some of these include Goodreads and Apple Books. These apps not only help you organize your virtual library, but they also provide personal recommendations based on your reading history. The option to join book clubs or participate in reading challenges through these apps can add a social element to your reading.
One of my favorite apps in the YouVersion Bible App. I select the KJV Bible and read along while I also play the audio. This helps me retain what I read better. I have also enjoyed their One Year Bible Plan. This helps me to stay on track with my Bible reading. You can also allow alerts to remind you to do your reading. I also enjoy adding family members on my friends list so we can see what we are highlighting and enjoying in our Bible Time. The neat thing about the plans is that you can invite friends to participate with you. This allows a space to discuss what you read with the group at the end of each day.
4. Physical Books
I absolutely love reading from a physical book. There is something about holding the book in your hand. Maybe it is because I grew up in a time where electronic books, apps, and all these things weren’t available. Some of my most favorite childhood memories revolve around reading a physical book on the couch, in my bed, or wherever I could find a comfy spot to lounge and read. The charm of physical books remains unparalleled. Take the time to immerse yourself in the sensations of turning the pages and enjoying the smell of a new book. Reserve physical books for moments when you can fully savor the act of reading without distractions. For me, I like to enjoy these in small pockets of my day while the kids are occupied or when riding as a passenger in the car.
5. Time Blocking
Efficiently manage your reading time. In order to read more books each month, implement time blocking techniques. Designate specific time slots in your schedule dedicated solely to reading. If you can do 30 minutes before bedtime, during lunch, or just squeeze it in to your routine in little free time pockets, take the time.
6. Set Realistic Goals
Quality over quantity! While the goal is to read more, it is essential to set realistic expectations. Focus on the quality of your reading experience rather than the quantity. Establish achievable monthly reading goals, considering your lifestyle and other commitments. This approach will ensure that you enjoy the process, absorb the contents, and have derive genuine satisfaction from each book.
Combining audiobooks, Kindle, reading apps, and physical books creates a holistic approach to reading that caters to different preferences and lifestyles. Embrace the flexibility that these formats offer. Customize your reading routine to your needs. Then, watch as your monthly book reading soars! The joy of reading lies not just in the number of books you consume, but in the enriching journey each story provides.
